Lib Dem influence sees beginning of the end of child detention

Last week saw Nick Clegg stand in for the PM at Prime Minister’s Question Time – the first Liberal to answer questions at PMQs since Lloyd George in 1922.
In it he was able to announce the closure of the family unit of Yarl’s Wood immigration centre


Time for a fairer voting system

Yesterday Nick Clegg announced that there will be a referendum on electoral reform in May 2011. Our current voting system is unfair, the Liberal Democrats, for example, received a quarter of the vote nationally in this year’s General Election yet won less than 10% of parliamentary seats.


Lib Dems meet to discuss coalition, now on to the economy

Yesterday (Sunday 16 May) there was a Liberal Democrat Special Conference in Birmingham to discuss the coalition with the Conservatives.


Lib Dems and Conservatives forming a stable government

It’s been an interesting and unusual experience for us all after the election. In Britain we are not used to coalitions and the negotiations that follow an election result such as we have just witnessed. Dawn Barnes gives her point of view.


Witney Election Results

It was a good night for the Liberal Democrats in West Oxfordshire as we held our second place in the General Election and doubled our lead over Labour. In addition we won two District Council seats with Julian Cooper being elected for Woodstock and Bladon and Larry Poole in Eynsham and Cassington, both replacing Conservatives.

We’ve received reports from across the constituency that people haven’t received the election communication that we gave to Royal Mail some time ago to distribute for us. Something was due to be delivered to every home, if you haven’t received it do let us know so that we can follow up after the election.

As the election gets closer the campaign has hotted up with three media pieces today focusing on the Witney constituency.


Dawn would move to the constituency

Following the hustings event in Witney last night and bumping into people in the town centre, candidate, Dawn Barnes has realised that it’s not clear that she intends to move to West Oxfordshire if elected.


Is this how democracy works?

West Oxfordshire usually has many more hustings than the two it has had this election. This time there was one in Woodstock, without either the Labour or Conservative candidates,
